Step 1: Visit your local thrift store and purchase an assortment of quirky wine goblets and plates or platters. I chose this green retro glassware because I loved the details. I also thought this porcelain plate had a great shape for a cake stand.
Thrift stores have some of the most amazing hidden treasures. During my hunt for dishware, it took some real discipline not to take this mermaid home. While you're out, don't forget to stop by your local Arts & Crafts store. Select colorful craft paints that work on glass and ceramic. Look for specialized enamel paints that are acrylic, certified non-toxic, and waterproof.
Step 4: Use a smaller brush to add details. Whether it's gold trim or polka dots, showcase your personal style in your cake stand design.
Step 5: Seal in your handiwork with a clear finish. Zinsser Brand Bulls Eye Shellac works best and is food safe, but you can use any non-toxic , waterproof sealant. These won't be dishwasher safe, but you can wipe them clean after each use.
Now, get to the baking so you can showcase these beauties!
